You need to have:
a. wages at least equal to the amount contributed to
her IRA;
b. family income of under $160,000 to get a deduction
for the IRA if you are a participant in a retirement
plan (like a 401(k)); if you are not a participant,
no income limit.
You can always put funds into her IRA; the question is
whether the contribution is deductible.

No taxable compensation or reaching age 70 1/2.

Default traditional IRA

I opened up a traditional IRA in my wife's name last year
who was not employed. Can i contribute to the same IRA
account for this year as she was not employed this year
also? What conditions trigger that i cannot contribute to
the same IRA account or make any contributions at all ?
