go to your CPA/tax advisor - ask him/her to prepare tax
projections for you then you should ask your CPA/tax advisor
the above question based upon the tax projections you should
be able to get good advice

Not enough information. You can get Section 179, if you have
enough income deither in the sole proprietorship or from
wages earlier in the year. Other than that, if you don't
have enough earnings to affect self-employment tax, you
might want to wait (or take a slower depreciation).

There are various reasons for timing purchases. I think we
would need more specifics than you SHOULD feel compfortable
giving in a public newsgroup in order to give an informed
opinion as to the tax consequences of buying your computer
this year or next. See a tax advisor.

With a lot of our clients, we leave the computer until the
last IF he has already bought it. Is the client in
desparate need of help? Write the total cost off now. Is
the client building up his business and will he have more
income next year? Buy the computer next year and then think
about 1) writing it off, or 2) taking the minimum
depreciation in 2005 so there will be some available over
the next 4 years.

Buy the computer when you ~need~ it. If you need to have
the computer before the end of the year, they buy it now.
If you don't have to have it "today", and can wait (can your
work / customers wait?), then defer until 2005. There may
be good discounts in January.

Default Computer Deduction

I became an independent contractor in August 2004. I need
to buy a new computer. Because I started freelancing later
in the year, would it be more advantageous to wait and
purchase the computer in 2005? Or should I make the
purchase this year? Thanks.
