Why can't it be sent in the day he dies? (Or even the day
after, if he handed it to someone else to mail?)

You got that right! They sometimes pick and choose which
year's they'll catch up on, even to the extent of deciding
not to file since there's no refund for them.

However, for non filing, IRS can go all the way back to
1913. And yes, I have a form in the files for that year.

I totally disagree with your verbiage. The last day to file
a 2001 tax return for a refund is 4/15/05 as has been
stated. The last day to file a 2001 tax return with a
balance due is the day before you die.

And I would never stop someone from sending other years in,
many folks do not like to do the taxes in order.

The last day to file your 2001 income taxes was 10/15/2002
provided you had a vaild extension to that date.

You should file that tax return as soon as possible. If you
have not files 2002 or 2003 you should do that also ASAP.

There are very heavy penalties for not filing returns as
required.

Contact a tax professional ASAP to take care of it.

The deadline for filing your 2001 tax return and getting a
REFUND is April 15, 2005. I suggest you send your tax return
by certfied mail and that you post it early enough for it to
be delivered well before April 15, 2005.

If you are due a refund, and if you file the 2001 federal
return after 4/15/2005, then you will lose the right to
receive any refund.

Otherwise, the statute of limitations does not even BEGIN to
run on the year until whenever you actually file the return.

Assuming you did not request and extension for 2001, your
correct, complete, and signed 2001 tax return must be
postmarked no later than Friday, April 15, 2005 (April 15,
2002 + three years). If you mail your 2001 on the
refund-statute deadline and your return happens to get lost
in the mail, you're SOL. For this reason, I recommend you
file it in peson at your local IRS walk-in office.

By "returns" I assume you mean REFUND. A return is the paper
form you file with the IRS.

A 2001 return must be filed by April 15, 2005 to be eligible
for a refund. After that date, the refund is forfeited.

You are not "too late". However, if you owe taxes, the bite
will be increased by interest and penalty amounts. The
original return was due on 4/15/02. You have until 4/15/05
to file the return to claim any refund due you. If you do
not make the claim before that time, you will lose it.

Default Back Tax Returns

I have procrastinated filing tax returns for 2001. When is
the last day I can file and get my tax returns for 2001 or
am I too late?

Thanks,

Joel
