For 2004, the 8283 adds a statement that for a donated
vehicle, you include a description of the car, model and
mileage. I expect more for the 2005 year.

However, why not take a look at the form 8282 which the
charity has to fill out and send to the IRS and, next year,
send to the giver too.

From what I've read so far, you must OBTAIN the written
acknowledgement within an appropriate time frame, and you
must include a sufficient WRITTEN DESCRIPTION of the item on
your return. However, I have not (yet) seen an explicit
requirement to ATTACH the charity's acknowledgement
(although that might be the easiest way to go if the
acknowledgment is readily available at the time you prepare
the return).

What I take from this is that cryptic descriptions, such as
"1989 Ford" or "3 bags of clothing" probably won't be
sufficient anymore.

It's in the law passed last month. I'm guessing that we may
be sending in a lot more 8453's on e-filed returns. What's
worse, is that the charity isn't required to send you the
acknowledgement until 30 days after they sell the vehicle,
so, if they don't sell it until May, you'd have to claim the
deduction either on an extended or amended return.

The new law is so onerous to charities that I think this
gravy train will be left at the station after the end of
December.

As with other required documents. Use form 8453 and attach
the document.

You all know how much the IRS loves to receive 8453s.

Probably going to have to mail it in......which is the
beginning of the defeat of the whole purpose of e-file now,
doesn't it.

I have not read anywhere that the "contemporaneous written
acknowledgement" must be attached to the return. What is
your source for this requirement?

No need to worry about this till 2006 filing season.

Just like any other appraisal required to be attached to the
form ... form.... whatever for noncash contributions.
Should go along with an 8453.

Default Attach car deduction acknowledgement to return?

Here's another question about tax law changes:
Starting in 2005, acknowledgement of the charitable
contribution of a car, boat, etc. with a value that exceeds
$500 must be attached to the tax return in order for the
contribution to be allowed. What about e-filed returns?
....Helen??
