If the goods and services are being provided in Virginia,
then the Virginia taxes must be paid.

It's up to the catering company to register with Virginia
appropriately. (Under some circumstances, it might not have
to, and wouldn't collect the taxes; in that case, you likely
have to pay a Use Tax).

Most likely the answer if yes, and at the Virginia tax rate.

As a side note, he probably needs a Virginia catering
license, business license, and if alcohol is being served, a
Virginia alcohol permit.

Default Out-of-state

We're having an event in Virginia. We're using a Maryland
Catering company to caterer the event. A tax questions for
you all.

- Can the vendor charge us tax on the food, the service, and
the rental of tables and chairs? Probably 3 questions.

If you could provide any reference material, that would be
great.

Regards,
Grace
