As Mike Wing, EA/CPA stated, efiling requires retention of
any W-2 and/or 1099R with federal withholding shown, plus
signature forms.

To that I would suggest keeping a paper copy of at least
pages1and2 of 1040 with other schedules if material.
Otherwise, the return resides on the computer anyway
(assuming you don't do it the old fashioned way, by hand).

With computer files, however, make sure you have backup AND
secure that computer with a password.

If you e-file, you are required to keep the W-2s for at
least a year and maybe 3, depending on the form you use to
e-file.

No documents or workpapers need be retained UNLESS you have
efiled the client's return. In that case you will probably
have to retain W-2s, PIN authorizations and possibly any
other "signature" forms that relate to the return.

Default recorded retention and information requirement

What client documents and working papers are we required to
keep after preparing a return? I know the fed requirement is
name, ssn, etc. But what about accounting records and w-2's
etc. Thanks.
