At first blush (and I rarely "blush") I asked "what book
are you looking in?" But on further reflection the 14cents
per mile is not cast in stone. That's just the max
deduction. One is indeed free to figure the miles at 10
cents, or a nickel a mile even.

Sorry, 14 cents/mile for 2003. I thought that one was set
at 10 cents/mile by law. Live and learn.

Generally mileage to church services is not deductible (good
for your soul!) But miles as a choir member, deacon,
visiting shut ins, working on the church grounds (as in
being a volunteer gardener), teaching classes, etc., is
deductible at 14 cents a mile (2003).

This is also the rule for miles for Scout leaders, Red
Cross, Little League, etc.

Possibly, at 10 cents/mile. It would be more clear if you
drove to the church at a time OTHER than attending services.

Sure. Charitable mileage rates are not so generous as the
business mileage rates, though: 14 cents a mile, last time I
checked.

Mileage for charitable trips can be deducted at the standard
rate of 14 cents per mile (plus tolls and parking fees).
Your time and services provided to the church are not
deductible.

Expenses associated with a charitable activity are
deductible.

IMO, yes. I deduct for trips when I'm there for the
church's convenience (for a committee meeting or to work),
but not when I'm there for my convenience.

My daughter will not sit in the nursery without me, so I
haven't been to services in almost a year. If I'm in the
nursery and Miss Nancy (the paid nursery attendant) is
there, my miles aren't deductible. If Miss Nancy is sick,
and I happen to be there and agree to watch other kids, my
miles aren't deductible. If Miss Nancy isn't available, and
someone calls me in advance and asks me to be the nursery
attendant (in which case I'd go even if my daughter were
sick or stayed up late and didn't go), my miles are
deductible.

As a volunteer going to and coming from such volunteer
services is deductible at $.14 cents per mile in 2004.

Default Deductible mileage?

If the money I give to my church is tax deductible as a
charitable contribution, then if I volunteer time and
services to my church, is the mileage to and from
deductible? Specifically- above and beyond being a regular
attendee.

Thanks,
Trina
