..... And you didn't show us how it relates to any other job
you might have, so it's not going to be deductible as an
unreimbursed employee expense incident to education.

You called it commuting. Commuting isn't deductible.

Thanks for the information--from what you say, my
*schooling* mileage won't be deductible, except *perhaps* as
an education expense--but since I'm going to school on my
own volition ( and not because of an employer telling me
to), it probably won't be. I think my Mary Kay related
mileage will be the only mileage that's deductible on my
Schedule C, in any case.

Why is this important? Commuting expense is not deductible.

Mileage to and from school isn't deductible, or included in
any educational tax credits as far as I'm aware.

Neither would this be mileage deductible on Schedule C
because it's not connected with your Mary Kay work.

So it really doesn't matter how you account for miles that
won't be deductible in any event.

I'm not sure why you would be keeping track of your
*schooling* mileage, unless it is an employee/business
expense. If that is the case, traveling from business place
to business place, job to job, which has to do with your
business is logged as a business expense on Schedule C. The
education mileage would be logged separately and reported,
as an Employee Business Expense (on Form 2106), along with
your other employee related expenses. If the employee
mileage, added to your other employee expense, exceeds 2% of
your adjusted gross income, and, when added to your other
deductions, exceeds your standard deduction, there would be
a tax benefit.

Qualifying education expense may be dealt with in many ways.
You may be able to use it as an adjustment to income, an
itemized deduction (employee expense on Schedule A), for an
education credit, or as business expense (Schedule C),
depending on facts 'n' circumstances. Mileage, as it relates
to an adjustment or credit, is not a factor.

Default commuting mileage question

I started up school again (X-ray Technology) in September.
The first month of my school my commuting mileage was 10
miles each way, Monday - Friday. Starting next week, I'll be
going to the school for 2 or 2 1/2 days each week, and the
other days going to a clinical training site (such as a
hospital or an imaging facility). These clinical sites
change each month. For example, starting next week, I'll be
travelling around 40 miles one way to a clinical site, but
next month, as I'll be changing locations, the clinic
commuting mileage will change.

How should I track this commuting mileage? I fill out a
Schedule C because I'm also a Mary Kay consultant, and have
to track my exact mileage and expenses, since this is the
way I started doing it way back in 1993 when I became a
consultant.

I just want to make sure I allocate my *schooling* mileage
correctly, even though the *normal* mileage to the
schoolhouse and back is 20 miles/day, and the *clinic*
mileage will vary based on location.

Thanks in advance,

Jean in VA
