If the last pickup at the Post Office is after the time of
customer pickup the next day drop off. Your analysis would
mean that many mailing service firms are breaking the law,
which they are not.

No. (Unless, possibly, he has a home office and does some
work there before going to bed and after getting up in the
morning.) One could make a case for the direct mileage from
the last stop to the post office being claimable, but it's a
stretch.

The easy answer would be no, he has no business purpose in
doing so, it is only for his own convenience. He'd have a
better argument if there was a good reason (say, the post
office is already closed, and the mail is such that it must
be taken to the counter, or shouldn't be left in a mailbox
overnight). If he had a home office with a secure place for
storing mail, that might weigh in his favor, too. Otherwise,
I think "last stop to home" and "home to first stop" legs
are mere commuting.

First of all, hopefully they know he is not mailing til the
next day. And my opinion is no, he cannot claim the going
home and to the PO miles as business as he has made that
choice. His mileage starts in the morning at the PO and
ends when he leaves the lot or whatever at the end of the
day.

Sounds like commuting, plain and simple. Possession of US
Mail, outside of his work environment, might be a
prosecutable offensive. Or at least a violation of the trust
his customers have placed in his service.

He may claim mileage from the post office to his next job of
that day (the day follwing his trip from the last business
place to his home).

Default Business Mileage

Individual is a courier. His last stop of the day is to
pickup mail from a business for delivery to the post office;
however, rather than driving to the post office to drop off
the mail he goes home for the day. He delivers the mail to
the post office the next morning. Can he claim business
mileage from the last stop to home and from home to the post
office the next morning.
