But Carol, when y'all pass by, you're ONLY 0.2 mile from my
office, assuming y'all take the nawth bridge.

Invite still open.

It's difficult to get the hubby to slow down enough to SEE
the Alabama line, much less stop anywhere near there. <G
But, with the hurricane tearing up my beloved panhandle, it
may be some time before I get back down there.

Well, the next time you "fly" down here, call me and we'll
do lunch, or have a beer. And I'll tell you about one
local preparer (EA owned) that said "sure, you can deduct
your home telephone bill since the company REQUIRES hubby
truck driver to ALSO have a land line".

LOL. Harlan, we "fly" to Columbus a lot from our area but
it is usually on the ground in an F250!

You are correct. That is what he claimed his previous
accountant told him he could do. We didn't think so but we
do try to verify these oddities that our clients come up
with from time to time. We've had to prove to clients that
what had been done in the past was wrong. Never forget the
lady who told us that yes she could get EIC in spite of the
fact that she and hubby filed separately. She knew she
could get it because she had gotten it before. When she did
her own returns.

We were wondering.

Maybe I'm still jet lagged from Tuesday night (ever have a
flight to Columbus from Atlanta cancelled cause of some
stupid hurricane?), but how does that work? the bit about
"exempt" from having commuting miles on unreimbursed
employee expenses because he is on call 24/7."

I'm reading it as he wants to deduct all mileage including
commuting on form 2106 because he's on call. Right?

If so, wrong!

And maybe you can find out what the previous tax preparer is
smoking? (grin

Then maybe he's been shocked a few too many times. I know
of no provision for non-emergency services (the one already
mentioned).

I don't think he would qualify on this count--he's an electrician. <G

The only thing I can think of is that (as I recall) people
like police officers need not recognize any imputed income
on the personal/commuting use of their employer-provided
cars if they are expected to be "on call" while at home.

Default No commute if on 24/7 call

We have a tax client who claims that they were told by their
previous tax preparer that they "are exempt" from having
commuting miles on unreimbursed employee expenses because he
is on call 24/7. Neither of us recall *ever* hearing
anything like this and couldn't find anything. Is he either
full of it (or didn't understand the previous preparer
correctly) or did his previous tax preparer tell him
something that wasn't correct? Or is this something that is
valid?

Thanks
