Shell only is $100/year (including email, a privatesubdomain's worth of email addresses, Usenet, lynx, etc.) - quote - > I use panix only for shell stuff, and I telnet to panix from

| I don't understand any of your technical problems but I do understand that this is a WONDERFUL site. I am in 3 diabetic newsgroups and spend half my time weeding out the shills, trolls, snake oil salesmen, purveyors of dirty pictures, violent opinions on Bush or Kerry, religious fights, and recently some kooks who insist on converting us to iron supplements! PLEASE, get healthy and stay on top of your ISP problems. ripco.com is one of the original Chicago area ISPs and the last independentone. They will offer shell accounts till the end of time. I've heard that other Usenet moderators use it. Maybe you can work out something with them as you don't need Chicago dialup. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

I haven't had a shell account in years, and even then they were rare. Your best bet would probably be to get a broadband connection that allows you to have a server on your end and set up your own machine for a shell account. That seems to be the way most people have gone. You might even try to get a corporation to host the FAQ and a shell account for you. - quote - > Problem #3: FAQ > We have never really had an FAQ. Writing by Code section or subsection is very difficult because it is not obvious, even to many professionals, under which code section a certain transaction or tax event falls. It might be better to have a popular names index as the table of contents of the FAQ with references to the Code sections contained therein. There are certain sections and topics we would be very interested in writing on if advertising is allowed. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

The local owner that started the company back in the late 1980's is a computer geek that has always catered to computer geeks -- and even after selling the ISP to some national company a few years back, he bought it back a year later -- the level of service has never gone away. Then I tried three or four more companies that offered shell accounts, and they were all horrible, too (including Verio!). But isp's are getting out of that business because they prefer not to have people diddling with their machines. When you have a shell account, you actually become a node on their computer. They think that makes them vulnerable to attack (and it does). I finally had to go over to a company giving a regular account with dsl. It's not the shell, but everything considered it's not too bad. | Problem #1: Moderator slowness If I seem slow than normal, it's not because I have a heavier wofk load. My problem for the last ten years has been insomnia. The problem now is that my daily intake of pain killers is causing me to sleep 12-16 hours a day. I now understand Rush Limbaugh's problem. Problem #2: ISP I started with Digex back in the early 90's. When Digex ceased offering dial-up shells, I went Clark.net which got bought out by Verio (the Borg of the ISP's). I got away from Verio so fast that I deserve at least a Silver Medal. I have been using Smart.net for about 4 years now. They have merged with another company. I had a simple question today as in what happened to this command I've been using every day since I changed ISP's and got a Du'h. Who knows of an ISP offering Shell Accounts? Problem #3: FAQ We have never really had an FAQ. My thoughts are to have people volunteer to write an FAQ on Sections and/or sub-sections and allow their advertsing/link/etc at the end of the FAQ. Don't start writing yet because I'd like a standard layout. I'd like some comments on the idea. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
