And if either W-2 had too much SS taken out, your claim is
against your employer, and is not claimable on your tax
return.

Bob, you are correct, and I am under the assumption that the
OP will get back to us if indeed one is over the limit. But
since we have heard nothing from the OP, I don't think it is
something we have to worry about. And in a CYA factor, I
just said that she may have a claim, I did not say against
who. <G

Against the employer that overwithheld the SS tax, not against IRS.

Since the OP is talking about 2002, the maximum amount is
$5,263.80.

I am hesitant to question anything you say, Helen, since
your knowledge of taxes is vastly greater than mine, but
this doesn't seem right. According to the IRS instructions
for 1040 line 64, and Pub. 505, if a single employer
withheld more than the maximum social security amount you
have to get the excess back from that employer. You can't
claim it as a credit on your tax return. You can only take
the credit if the excess resulted from one person having two
or more employers during the year, i.e. the total of two or
more W-2s for the same person exceeds the maximum, but each
W-2 individually does not exceed it.

This comment made me think about GIGO. Since you have to
tell the program which spouse the W-2 belongs to, I'll bet
that's where the error was. Wouldn't affect the calculation
of income tax, but it could artificially create excess FICA
claimable on the 1040.

And you won't spend 20 bucks to understand why the IRS is complaining???

Go to your local IRS office with the letter, and ask them. They'll be
able to explain the specifics that the form letter merely hints at.

Try comparing your W-2s to the paper copy of the return you printed for
yourself?

Get the W-2's in front of you and pretend it's third grade. Add up the figures
and see who's right.

I tend to agree with TT, that you made an input error. Check
your W-2 forms (one for you, one for spouse) and verify that
neither one had more than $5,394 withheld for SS (Box 4). If
either spouse had 2 or more W-2 forms, make sure that the
total of all Box 4 amounts does not exceed the above value.

We usually do not answer tech questions, but I will try to
help you. How many Forms W-2 did you enter for your Husband?
How many for yourself? If only one for each, there should
not have been anything on that line.

Since you mention only 2 W-2s, I will take the grand leap
and say you are incorrect. But if either of the W-2s had SS
in excess of the amount that year, then you have a claim.

Default TurboTax Line 65 error

This is about my joint 2002 return I filed with my husband
using the TurboTax software. Yesterday I received a notice
from IRS stating that we had errneously calculated the
excess Social Sec Tax withheld, which was refunded to us.
Since we used the software and reported everything
truthfully as per our W2s, I am little bit confused as to
why this has happened, who is liable to pay this, and what
our options. My husband has meanwhile relocated to India, so
I have to sort this out. I contacted TurboTax and they say
that we must have entered the two W2s for the same person,
whereas I am quite certain that this was not the case. Since
I used the web version of the software, I do not know how to
verify this except by paying the $19.95 fee that they charge
at their 'tech support'.

Please let me know if any one can help me.

Thanks
