Schedule SE calculates and gets you to pay self employment tax, which is sort of twice your social security and medicare taxes. It is schedule SE that the social security folks will use to credit your social security earnings to you. __ Art Kamlet ArtKamlet [at] AOL.com Columbus OH K2PZH << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

Get an IRS form 1040, a Schedule C and Schedule SE. Figure> security adminstration. I make $4000 or so this year. I am > self employed, part time. I want to pay > social security taxes towards my retirement. How do I do > this?. do I fill out a w2 form? thanks. you business net on the C, then your SE taxes on SE and put the net from C on line 12 of the 1040, 1/2 the SE goes on line 28 and the full amount of Schedule SE goes on line 55 of 1040. Note that if you owe no tax on the Schedule C net, 1040 line 54 cannot be less than zero. So you are reporting your SE tax on line 55 and line 72. follow the instructios on how to pay and where to pay. P.S. You cannot just pay SE directly. ed << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

You report your income on Schedule C and calculate the SE taxes (social security and medicare X 2) on Schedule SE. The information from these two schedules then transfer to your 1040. IMHO, you need to get more formal with your bookkeeping and keep better records to substantiate your income and expenses. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

How do I do > this?. do I fill out a w2 form? thanks. $1,000 on the bottom line of your 2004 tax return, you would pay the tax when you file your tax return for 2004. If you are having tax withheld in other employment, as long as you have paid in at least 90% of what will be your current year's tax, or 100% of your prior year's tax, there is no penalty for underpayment. Otherwise, you would be expected to make quarterly payments of estimated tax. You should get Form 1040-ES (PDF), Estimated Tax for Individuals and complete the worksheet on page 4, to help you figure your estimated tax liability. Schedule SE (Self-Employment) is used to calculate that tax and is submitted with your Form 1040. "Jack" - John H. If the 15th falls on a weekend the estimate is due on the next Monday. You may download a form 1040ES from www.irs.gov and fill it out and send it in with your estimate. Put your Social security # and 1040 ES and the year (2004 for this year) on the check. It would be advisable for you to go to a tax professional at least this first year. Schedule C for your business (I know you say you don't have> security adminstration. a "company", but it's still a bsuiness.), and schedule SE determines the amount of social security tax paid. It gets reported to the Social Security Administration eventually. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

Your self-employment income and expenses go on Schedule C of> security adminstration. I make $4000 or so this year. I am > self employed, part time the 1040. The bottom line of Schedule C flows to Schedule SE, where you calculate the self-employment (FICA and Medicare) tax. Schedule SE flows to the "other taxes" portion of the 1040, where you pay it. | You report any such income on Schedule C of your form 1040. Any profit shown on it is carried to for SE for self-employment income, which is calculated there and paid along with your other income tax. IRS then forwards this info to SS for you.
