The grieving often comes later. Second, when my father died, my mother was in the hospital and unable to handle any of the details (e.g., funeral arrangments, which cost money). We were running around like crazy trying to cut the red tape. Then my mother died four days later. -- D.F. Please accept my regrets for your loss. You really should> out safety deposit box and get cash out of accounts? contact a lawyer in your community/state who is experienced in probate administration. Probably not. (At least not in Indiana -- in regardmy mother's death -- or in California, according to legal research done on my behalf.) But this is more a legal question than a tax question. - quote - > Should surviving spouse clean
If the accounts were supposed to be frozen, then> out safety deposit box and get cash out of accounts? this action would be illegal. Do you really expect to be advised to do something illegal. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

I am sorry for your loss.> out safety deposit box and get cash out of accounts? This is a state banking law question. You will have to ask the bank(s) where you have to accounts. This is one question that I always ask when opening a new account in a new state when we have moved from state to state. In KY they close all accounts when anyone listed on the account has died. They have one person who is in charge of reading the obits to see who died and close the accounts of those who did die. I have seen the obits show up on Tuesday when the person died on Friday night. This gives the spouse time on Monday to clear out any accounts. Good luck. Those aren't tax questions but legal questions. The first> out safety deposit box and get cash out of accounts? depends on your bank and the state and how the accounts are set up. The second is likely a really bad idea as anyone can prove you went into the safety deposit box and without witnesses you can't prove what you didn't take out of the box.
