Looks like I missed one. Once you have been to bed with

If you think money is unimportant, you obviously have never
been without money. My wife was a hag. I am now with a nice
young asian lady and I am doing fine. My only regret is
that I did not divorce my wife when her looks faded around
30.

I thought that's what I did.

I'm willing to cut the OP a little slack on this one. One,
s/he could be in shock. The grieving often comes later.

Second, when my father died, my mother was in the hospital
and unable to handle any of the details (e.g., funeral
arrangments, which cost money). We were running around like
crazy trying to cut the red tape.

Then my mother died four days later.

Please accept my regrets for your loss. You really should
contact a lawyer in your community/state who is experienced
in probate administration. The answers to your questions are
dependent on your state laws.

My condolences. Contact an attorney who can answer your
legal questions.

My condolances. Unless, of course, you had something
to do with the death.....

Probably not. (At least not in Indiana -- in regard
my mother's death -- or in California, according to
legal research done on my behalf.) But this is more
a legal question than a tax question.

If the accounts were supposed to be frozen, then
this action would be illegal. Do you really expect
to be advised to do something illegal.

I am sorry for your loss.
This is a state banking law question. You will have to ask
the bank(s) where you have to accounts. This is one
question that I always ask when opening a new account in a
new state when we have moved from state to state. In KY
they close all accounts when anyone listed on the account
has died. They have one person who is in charge of reading
the obits to see who died and close the accounts of those
who did die. I have seen the obits show up on Tuesday when
the person died on Friday night. This gives the spouse time
on Monday to clear out any accounts. Good luck.

If your husband or wife just died today, may I please
suggest that you take a few hours (or days) to mourn before
worrying about anything as unimportant as money?

(And, although you didn't specify the state you live in, I
believe that the answers to all of your questions should be
"no.")

Peace be with you.

Those aren't tax questions but legal questions. The first
depends on your bank and the state and how the accounts are
set up. The second is likely a really bad idea as anyone
can prove you went into the safety deposit box and without
witnesses you can't prove what you didn't take out of the
box.
