Kentucky defines a resident for tax purposes to include all
persons domiciled in the state, and makes no provision for a
domiciliary to be a nonresident. Your domicile is your
true, fixed home and permanent establishment; the place to
which, whenever absent, you intend to return. Generally, in
order to change your domicile, you must meet all of three
requirements: (1) move away from the old domicile; (2) move
to and reside in a new location; and (3) intend to remain in
the new location permanently or indefinitely.

If you are in Tennessee to complete a course of study over a
fixed period of time, and you do not intend to make a
permanent home there after you get your degree, then you
will probably remain a Kentucky resident while you are
attending school in Tennessee. As a result you will be
subject to Kentucky income tax on all of your income,
regardless of where you earn it.

Become a resident of Tennessee. Driver's license, voter
registration, group membership, etc. If you Google this
group you'll find many discussions of this.

Move. Or possibly stay in TN during any break in classes,
register to vote in TN, get a TN drivers license, etc.,
making your TN on-campus address other than a temporary
address.

Sorry not to have a more substantive answer, but I find
it hard to believe that KY has a "heavy" tax burden.

Default Kentucky taxes

I'm currently a student in Tennessee and also have been
living and working there for the past year. Since Tennessee
has no state income tax, how to I avoid being taxed heavily
in the next tax year if my current permanent address is
still in Kentucky?
