Thanks Guys. These are all great replies. I lived in
Maryland in the late 90's and really liked it. It didn't
seem as crowded as the areas of Virginia that I'm consider
now (McLean, Fairfax, Arlington). It would be worth, though,
if the tax advantage is there. I appreciate your replies.

Can't help with your specific questions, but want to suggest
that you make sure of who will tax you! Years ago the house
I lived in had a Washington D.C. address, but was located in
Maryland. (near Chevy Chase). Think I paid taxes to
Maryland.

I have lived and worked in both, as both an employee and
manager. But I am not a professional.

Viriginia has a higher state tax rate, but there is a county
income tax in Maryland that makes the total income tax
burden much higher. Among the highest in the country.

Property taxes vary greatly by county in each state.
Maryland has no personal property tax, Virginia does.

Virginia is generally considered more employer friendly. But
this really is a complex question.

Income tax, in decreasing order, is DC, Maryland, Virginia.

It depends on what local jurisdiction within the state.

I can't imagine that any state would be more favorable to
employers in terms of employee protections than Virginia.
Sorry, I don't know about the states' UE tax rates.

In all respects I would favor Virginia. The income tax is
the lowest. Because the cost of housing, that you would wish
to live in, is quite high the real estate taxes are quite
high. Generally, Virginia was and to some extent somewhat
pro business. I suggest you visit and have a Realtor drag
you around to get a feel for NOVA.

Default Virginia or Maryland

I'm a futures trader currently living in Chicago. I would
like to move to the DC area next year. I'm at a stage where
I need to decide whether I should move to Virginia or
Maryland.

I have the following considerations:

1. Which would have a lower state income tax? My income is
above $150k per year.
2. Which is cheaper to live in as far as property/real
estate taxes?
3. I will be hiring people to work for me. Which state is
more favorable to employers as far as payroll taxes,
incorporation, employee requirements, etc?

At the least, I am hoping that someone can refer me to a tax
attorney or accountant with whom I can consult for answers.
Thanks a million.
