Thanks for the tip on that. I had forgotten that there were> 1985 returns. 3 - 4 years of "pilot" programs before efiling was ready for prime time. I notice that Kleinrock has deleted some of those early Rev Procs by proclaiming that they are no longer relevant. The most solid thing I could find was a 1990 Proc that dealt with 1989 returns. It did look like efiling was fairly universal at that time. The test was expanded from 3 metropolitan areas (sorry I don't know which ones but I think my area of NC was included) to 7 metropolitan areas for 1986 returns. Those 7 were: Areas Counties/Cities Included Cincinnati/Dayton/Springfield Counties of Adams, Ohio Brown, Butler, Clark, Clermont, Clinton, Fayette, Greene, Hamilton, Highland, Miami, Montgomery, Preble and Warren in Ohio. Counties of Boone, Campbell and Kenton in Kentucky. Dearborn County in Indiana Phoenix, Arizona Maricopa County Raleigh/Durham/Fayetteville Counties of Chatham, Cumberland, Durham, Franklin, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, Orange, and Wake in North Carolina. Albany/Schenectady/Troy Counties of Albany, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectedy, Warren and Washington. Milwaukee, Wisconsin Counties of Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha. Sacremento/Stockton, Counties of El Dorado, California Placer, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Sutter, Yolo, and Yuba. Norfolk/Virginia Beach/ Cities of Chesapeake, Newport News, Virginia Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Poquoson, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and York County. I hope the formatting comes out ok, it was a cut and paste job. I believe 1990 (1989 returns) was when electronic filing went nationwide. 1989 returns were the first ones, in certain areas, that could file electronically with a balance due. I remember my boss in 1986 wouldn't entertain the idea of electronic filing. Of course he didn't want to buy an HP LaserJet because someone else should work the "bugs" out of new technology. | Does anyone recall what year electronic filing generally became available for 1040s? I noticed that I've had an EFIN since tax year 1992, but I suspect it started a few years before that. Thanks!
