You should also check the tax treaty for the country you are
from. Some countries have arrangements regarding credit for
one's social security system when paid into the other
country's system. If the treaty has such a provision and
the U.S. tax is less for the same amount of credit, you
might NOT want to seek the refund....

OK, it is all clear, thank you
One more thing btw, we are four students taht worked in the
US and we are thinking of using one common account for
refund purposes because it is safer and faster, moreover we
all closed our accounts in order to not acumulate interest
or overdraft... so is it posssible to fill in one common
account for all four of us in order to get ther our taxes
refunded?

(it is an account in an amercna bank and it has routing
number etc) later we will transfer the money to Europe

Thank you

See page 45 in IRS Pub 519 "U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens" for
the rules relating to the exemption from social security
taxes and how to request a refund.

Default "Social Security and Medicare return for a student exchange visitor"

I would like to know what documents one needs to file if
s/he was an exchange student visitor in USA for a period not
longer than 6 months. I read that if one is on F or J visa
may request to have refunded the money withheld for SS and
Medicare.

Thank you
