As for the expenditures (NOT expenses) being possibly charitable contributions for the benefit of state government maybe, some validation from the university would be appropriate. | I have a retired professor who is "employed" by a university but not paid. Professor emeritus status....He teaches students, supervises grad students, does lab research in his specialized field, entertains visiting scholars and lecturers, and attends conferences including speaking at them. His expenses can certainly be charitable deductions. But could I use the FBO status on Form 2106 which is for fee-basis officials of a government entity (which would include the university)? He is recognized by the university but not paid, nor reimbursed. He baffles my software every year and 2016 would be VERY easy to use.
