Do nothing. IRS will notify you of the discrepancy, credit
the requested amount to 2004, and refund the balance without
any additional paperwork from you.

Default amend return due extimated tax error

I submitted my 1040 on 4/14/04 and it shows that I overpaid
my tax. I asked that some of it be applied to my first 2004
estimated tax payment and the remainder be refunded to me.
I just determined that I had overstated my 2003 estimated
tax payments. I filled out a 1040X which shows I owe the IRS
but sufficient overpayment would remain to apply to my
first 2004 estimated tax payment and still get a refund.
Should I submit the 1040X now with a check or wait until
they check and inform me my estimated tax payments are in
error by an amount which reduces my refund by the same
amount?
