I highly doubt there is anything for you to do because you
misunderstand the research credit. You didn't provide any
information as to your research and its commercial
applications. The research credit is too complex to explain
on this newsgroup, but the travel expense question is easy.
If the travel is related to your computer consulting
practice you can expense part of the trip (excluding 50% of
your meals and entertainment) on your Schedule C.

Now is a good time to find a tax professional for you to use.

Default Research credit?

Hi, I have a one-man computer consulting practice (sole
proprietorship). I am also a researcher, and one of my
research paper was accepted by an International conference
which will be held in France. However, my affiliation on the
paper is the university where I worked for my Ph.D, even
though the paper was accepted after I finished my Ph.D. I
heard of a term "research credit", can I claim the travel
expense as business expense? What I should know and do from
the tax point of view?

Thanks a lot!

Yi
