If that's not the case I see no reason for filing on paper. Just line through incorrect number and print correct number atop it. That will do just fine for filling your 1040. However, you should goad your previous employer to making the correction with Social security administration in order that you get credited for your proper earnings. File your return with the correct SS#. Send the W2 with theincorrect SS#. Notify the employer IN WRITING that this was incorrect and ask if they would be so kind as to correct this. If not, when the letter arrives saying these two documents don't match, you will have made the contact asking for the correction. DO NOT do a new W2c because you can't do that. That is for the employer (or their payroll service) to do. You can't do that.> that job, the employer and I left on bad terms. The only place where it really matters that the W-2's SSN be correct is in Social Security's records, and unless you're retiring soon, making sure that those records are correct can wait. File (on paper) your return using the Substitute W-2 form with the erroneous W-2 attached. There should be no problem. About a year from now check your SSA earnings record to make sure that your 2003 earnings were properly recorded. Your self-prepared W-2C wouldn't do any good because Social> that job, the employer and I left on bad terms. Security gets those forms. You risk losing credit for 2003 in your work history. If you are so anxious to file now, go ahead, but be prepared for a letter from the IRS either this year or next. | I just found out that my SS# was wrong on my W2. When I left that job, the employer and I left on bad terms. I do not believe that she is in any hurry to get me out a revised W2C. I know that I have options in about a month as far as filing with a different form (for not recieving a W2), but would there be any concequences if I just filled out a W2c myself with the corrected SS# and filed. I am getting about 1g in a return, and I dont think that it is right for her to put me off like this. Eventually I believe she will send me a corrected form, but not until after the deadline 4/15. ambision24 << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
