Technically you can attach a statement to the return with
your name, address, SS#, etc. and a statement that you had
no US source income during your nonresidence period and no
"not effectively connected U.S. income." But in my recent
experience these returns get rejected.

Default Dual Status -- how to

My wife and I moved to the US in May 2003. So we are filing
under dual status this year, i.e. file married separately.

My questions are:

1. Prior to moving to US, I do not have any US sourced
income nor income effectively connected to a US trade or
business. Do I still need to file a 1040NR (dual status
statement) even though I have nothing to report?

2. My wife worked for 1 day in 2003 and has a a W2 of $108.
She has a SSN. Can I claim exemption for her on my return?

Thanks very much for your help.
Vinnie
