TurboTax doesn't tell you. There was some discussion about
that in the Quicken newsgroup about a month ago.

I didn't independently consider whether she was required to
file in the first place -- for better or for worse, I was
assuming that TurboTax would tell me if there was no need to
file.

Was she required to file a return in the first place? If
not, then forget the amendment.

If she owes no money than she owes 5 bucks less than that.
If she does not understnd that and If she feels better
filing an ammended return for no reason at all, sure go
ahead.

Another amended return question:

I helped an elderly lady in our church file her taxes.
Taxable income was so low that there was nothing owed,
federal or state -- which was good because nothing had been
withheld.

Now the brokerage holding her modest investment account has
issued a corrected 1099 that shows about $5 less in taxable
dividends but the same overall amount of dividends. I
checked and (obviously, I suppose) she still owes nothing,
federal or state.

The question is: Should I help her file an amended return?
That is, is there some threshhold amount below which she's
legally not required to file the amended return? If so,
please cite something I can print and take to her . . .
unless I can find some clearly stated rule that exempts her,
she'll want to file an amended return.

Thanks for your help,

I used it last year, and I agree. I like TaxBrain better. It
was very accurate and easy to use. I also found their
customer service chat was quite quick. Just something to
keep in mind for next year.
