Generally, scholarships are excluded from income. However,
If a scholarship recipient receives payment for services
(including future services) that are required as a condition
of the scholarship, the scholarship must be reported in
income. Only if it's reported as income, can it be used for
the Lifetime Learning Credit and only if the payments are
for "qualified" education expenses. Seek help from a local
pro.

Default Pay taxes on a education fellowship?-eek

I am finishing a master's degree (NY) that started last
summer and finishes this year. The fellowship I recieved is
not through the university but through a non-profit. I
received a 1099 that reflects my stipend as Consultant
Income. Does anyone know if this is right? I want to file a
Life Learning Credit.

Any advise/clarity would be appreciated
