Isn't it the postmark date, not the date mailed, that
determines the year?

Neither date.

Use the date the checks left your hands, mail date, if
posted that way. Delivery date if you personally carried
them to the charity.

Default which date used for charitable gifts ?

Hi,

I wrote a few checks for charitable gifts in Dec. 2003 but
the checks were cashed in early Jan. 2004. Can I claim those
donations for 2003 tax ? Which date is used for the claim -
the date on the check or the date of its clearing ?

Thanks for any help.
