Put her on an automatic 120-day extension until August 15.
Each year in July, IRS adds the most recent tax year to its
information returns database, i.e. Forms W-2, 1099, etc.,
and drops the oldest year, which currently is 1997. The
process of adding the most recent year's information returns
is ongoing from July to October, but most of them get
uploaded in July. If the now bankrupt company did file a
2003 Form W-2, by August 15 of this year your daughter will
be able to obtain a copy at no charge from the IRS. The
copy on file with IRS will not contain any state wage
information however. If it no Form W-2 from this company
shows up, she will need to follow the procedures in Topic
154 on the IRS website. Use Form 4868 to request an
extension. For your convenience, links these resources are
posted below.

Your daughter should qualify to use one of the free e-file
services featured on the IRS free e-file page. Returns can
be e-filed through October 15, 2004.

Default Lost W2

Sat down to do my daughter's taxes this weekend. It should
have been a snap.

She's in college and she had three jobs last year. I have
her W2's from two of the employers.

Her third employer went bankrupt during the year. She
"thinks" she got a W2 from them, but has lost it. There's
no one at the now-defunct company to call for a re-print and
the tax deadline is coming. She tossed her check stubs, so
I don't have that to use for info.

How can she find out what her W2 amounts should be so she
can file her taxes?

Larry
