The person claiming the child's dependency exemption canalso claim the child tax credit for that child. A few points, since it's rare that MFS is an advantageous filing status: 1. If you received an advance child tax credit payment last summer based on a 2002 joint return, half of it is attributable to each of you on your 2003 return. 2. You both must use the same method of calculating deductions: itemized or standard.
