OK, thanks everybody. I think I got it.

A 1040X reducing income clearly shows the amount of the additional
refund claimed.

You wait. Wait till you get your regular refund, and THEN
file the 1040x.

Yes, you missed it. It's near the bottom of the 1040X.

Also, I'd recommend you wait until you actually get your
original refund. That way you can be sure the IRS has
processed your return and has finished with it.

Don't send it until you get your refund.

You must have. See line 19 of Form 1040-X.

On the Form 1040X there is a line near the bottom right side
for entering the amount of refund received.

Default Amended Tax Return

My broker at the last minute sent me corrected 1099-DIVs and
1099-INTs. The corrections are to my advantage, and increase
my refund.

The problem I see is that I filed electronically for my
uncorrected refund. I'm worried if I submit the 1040X now,
the IRS will refund the uncorrected amount a second time,
instead of just the increment.

I don't see a place on the 1040X to tell the IRS that it has
already refunded X amount. Did I miss it?

How do I handle this so that I don't wind up returning a
duplicated refund?
