Here's a really simple answer. There is NO need to amend
the return, much less to send any letter to IRS. (Rule # 1:
try NOT to EVER confuse them.)

Remember it was an "Income TAx" return you file, relating
ONLY to Income Tax.

I wouldn't bother with this. Just file the amended W-2 with
your tax information for the year involved.

It is way beyond overkill. You need send nothing to the
IRS. You should check your earnings record with Socail
Security in about 2 years to make sure you got the credit.

Yes, if you have that information and think it's relevant.

If the only thing that changed is the Social Security and
Medicare amount, and there wasn't any additional tax
liability on your part, then I don't think there is a need
to file a 1040X.

Default Drafting a letter to IRS (question on refiling)

My employer did not deduct social security tax for 1 month
in Dec 2000 (I did not have to pay social security tax for
the other months because of my immigraton status as a
student).

I found the error while preparing taxes for 2003. Since
then, the employer has paid the taxes and given me an
amended W-2 which shows that social security and medicare
have been paid.

My tax liability for year 2000 does not change however since
the changes are only with social security. I briefly talked
to a tax advisor who concurred with me and advised that for
additional safety - I should send a letter to IRS and asking
if I have to refile my taxes and keep a copy with me. I
talked to an IRS rep and she also agreed (given the fact
that they had no idea if there is any form of IRS that can
help do this job - she could not advise on what happens if
IRS comes after me later)

Now my problem is to draft a letter:
Question
a) Can I include the id number of the IRS rep whom I talked to
b) Should I be attaching all the tax info or just the amended W-2

Is my overall approach of trying to be demonstrate that I am acting in
good faith ok?
Thanks
