1970"The following history of NJ sales tax thanks to on-line question response from New Jersey State Library: In 1965 there was no sales tax. New Jersey's first sales tax was enacted in 1935 at a rate of 2 percent. It expired in 1938. The Sales and Use Tax Act became effective July 1, 1966 and the rate was set at 3 percent. The rate was increased to 5 percent effective March 1st, 1970 and to 6 percent effective Jan. 3, 1983, and to 7 percent effective July 1, 1990. This rate was reduced to 6 percent effective July 1, 1992."
