Why not? I've known people who did their returns and
checked the box asking the IRS to figure the taxes. The
IRS got it wrong, and later not only asked for additional
taxes and interest, but penalties on top.

That's the American way - blame someone else for your own
mistakes.

Banks also have computers. The following is from irs.gov
website.

"In the event the financial institution is unable to process
the transaction, the taxpayer will be responsible for the
tax payment and for any penalties and interest."

If the IRS has a problem with their computer, could they
really get away with penalizing you?
