I got a Preparer's Tax Identification Number (PTIN) from
the IRS.

They want any numbers that you want. I tell people just
pick one out of the air. some choose their birthdates or
such. It can be anything except all zeros.

It is any 5-digit number you choose. The IRS will ask for it
as a security measure if any discussion with you takes
place.

Form 1040 instructions, page 58: "enter the designee's name,
phone number, and any five numbers the designee chooses as
his or her personal identification number (PIN)."

It allows her to indicate on the return that the IRS can
talk to you if they have processing questions. Completely
optional.

That'd be 5 digits.

Pick any 5 digits and write them in. That's the only way
the IRS has of knowing that you're you.

Page 58 of the 1040 packet. But you only have to read as
far as page 5 to find the nice picture of the 1040 that
points you to page 58.
