You are probably asking the wrong question. Failing that, my Plan B is to use > TaxAct. Martin is right - for capital gains, the only difference between Basic and Premier is that Premier has extra help for sales of securities. Either version will let you complete a Schedule D. It seems that you asked the "chat" people how to switch from Basic to Premier, because you assumed that was the solution to your problem. What you really want to do is enter a sale of stock, or enter information from a 1099-B, in the Basic version. (You don't literally want to enter the capital gains - the gain is the result of the calculation, not the input.) I encourage you to first take another crack at it yourself, looking in the Help if necessary. If you click on the "2. Income" button on the Navigator Bar, does it list "Stock, Bond, and Mutual Fund Sales" as one of the topics you can choose? Try clicking on that and see if it does what you need. If you still can't figure it out, go back to the "chat" and ask them how to enter a sale of stock, or how to enter transactions from a 1099-B. Don't mention Premier, and don't say you want to enter capital gains. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

The basic version can handle capital gains. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

| I've used Turbo Tax for the Web the last two years. I started out this years return, selected the Basic version, and got most of the way through my return and noticed that it hadn't done anything with capital gains. I then discovered that I need the Premier version in order to do this. I used their "chat" facility to find out how to do this and the person I got connected with told me there was no way to convert the return I had started to a Premier version, but that I would have to start all over again. So I started looking for how to start over. I actually did manage to start a Premier return (it even showed the Premier logo on every page) but it still remembered that I was in a Basic return, and had no place to enter capital gains. So i went back to their chat facility and asked what I have to do. They told me I would have to enter a new ID and password. I asked how to import my 2002 information if I'm using a different ID, and they told me it can't be done - I'll have to enter it all again. As far as I can tell, my only recourse is to talk to them on the phone, in which case I'll likely spend $19.95 to have someone tell me the same thing. So my question here is - Does anyone know of a way to create a Premier return after having started a Basic return and still get my 2002 data? Failing that, my Plan B is to use TaxAct. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
