It passes my self-employment income sniff test as it does
not appear to be a prize or a gift. Unless you can provide
some other reason for the payment other than his work, it is
subject to employment tax.

Default U.S. Citizen paid by foreign company

U.S. Citizen working for US company in Taiwan for three
months in 2003. He was paid by US company but also received
a direct payment of $4,500 from the Taiwan Company. No tax
document was received. No taxes withheld. Can this income
be put on "Other Income" line? What about FICA? He
expects additional payments this year. Thanks for your help
