Since you used the term "college tuition" in your first
posting, I am assuming that this is for a typical college
student working towards a degree, not job-related education
for someone who is employed.

What you have to enter in TurboTax is "qualified education
expenses" that you paid in 2003. That is not necessarily the
same as the amount on the 1098-T, which is why TurboTax does
not refer to the 1098-T.

I'm not a tax professional. From what I've read in this
newsgroup, and from my own experience, 1098-T forms from
colleges are not reliable sources for the amount of
qualified education expenses. It even says on the back of
the form, "The amount shown in box 1 or 2 may represent an
amount other than the amount actually paid in 2003."

As to where you enter qualified education expenses in
TurboTax, if you are using the interview it is in the
Education Expenses section. To get there, click button 3,
"Deductions," on the Progress Bar. In the Navigator window
that opens, click on "Education Expenses and Credits." As
you go through that part of the interview, one of the
screens will tell you to enter qualified education expenses.
If you prefer to enter directly on the forms, it goes on the
Education Tuition and Fees Worksheet in Part II, column (b).

If you need help calculating qualified education expenses,
try the Help or Common Questions in TurboTax. If you need
more details, or have any complications, get IRS Publication
970, "Tax Benefits for Education." Note that if the amount
of tuition you paid in 2003 is over $10,000, the exact
amount of expenses isn't going to matter, so don't go crazy
trying to figure it out precisely.

No specific "place" for a 1098-T. Depends on whether you
itemize, have a high income, or are a shortform beginner.

Try sticking the amount onto page 1, 1040, line 26. (Up to
$3000 if your income isn't over 65.000 single or 130,000
married.).

Then write down the result on your tax.

Then erase that, and try the amount on Form 8863 (either Hope or Lifetime
credit).

See how that works. Then try it on Schedule A, misc employee deductions,
remembering that if used there, it affects the state return, too.
Or try a preparer.
