Since it's not the cash that's used for the charitable
organization, but rather the services of the vehicle, it's a
non cash line itme.

Ah yes, disregard my reply above. This do change, and I now
see at least pub 17 says to report out of pocket expenses as
cash contribs.

Out of pocket expenses for a charitable organization are
cash contributions, and I am almost certain the IRS
instructions say that as well.

Since I pay cash for my gas, oil and car service, I would
definitely consider it a "cash donation." Of course, if one
rode a horse, hay would definitely be "non-cash." <G
Credit cards? Who knows? Will the outstanding balance be
paid with cash, or by check? And if the check is rubber?

But -- does it go under "cash donations" or "non-cash
donations"? (This has been asked before on mtm, but
not answered, as far as I can tell.)

Yes, at 14 cents a mile or the actual expense whichever is
better.

Yes, you can deduct that. See the instructions for schedule
A on "Gifts to Charity." If you download Pub i1040 it's on
page 81:

"If you drove to and from the volunteer work, you may take
14 cents a mile or the actual cost of gas and oil. Add
parking and tolls to the amount you claim under either
method. But do not deduct any amounts that were repaid to
you."

The simplest way to handle this, is to deduct 14 cents per
mile -- plus any out-of-pocket costs for tolls or parking --
on Schedule A, under Gifts to Charity. (There's an
alternate method of computing the actual cost of gas and
oil, but mileage is more straightforward.)

If it's a qualified organization, yes, mileage is
deductible. See Publication 526.

Default Mileage - Deduction when vehicle is used to volunteer

I volunteer for a not for profit youth sports organization.
I was told once that the mileage is deductable but I've been
unable to find any information as to whether that is true or
not.

Sincerely,
Dale Williams
