I was basing my advice to remove all vestiges of being one's own paid preparer thinking about a fellow down here who back years ago used one of his pre printed forms to do his own return. He signed it of course, but didn't bother to sign the paid preparer section which clearly had his name and company name and number thereon. Yep, he got the penalty notice. So then, Jennifer, keep GOOD records. My tax software uses subdirectoies for different types of returns, so my main sd is for paid returns, another for individuals for whom I efile their self prepared returns, another for another preparer who sends clients to me with form 8453 on top, and of course a personal sd for mine, relatives, and my "sample" return for a fellow name of Junior and Sue Samples. Remember him? BR-579. His "wife" was the name of someone at Doraville service center who always signed letters going out to taxpayers. I always thought her's was a cover name, but couldn't prove it. I don't think IRS people use cover names these days, or do they? I prepare my children's returns with no charge either, but still show it as if I am a paid preparer. It is not worth the trouble of deleting it. The IRS isn't going to hassle me about it and I've done it that way for several years. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

| Hopefully, this isn't too silly of a question! I'm a first year tax preparer employed with an independent firm. Am I allowed to efile my own return using my EFIN and PTIN number? I have my own professional software at home which I plan on using; not my employer's software. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
