Thanks to everyone who answered. I read the instructions
again for Schedule C and now see the difference. BTW - this
is for my son's tax return. I own a vary small C Corp, have
the Corp tax return prepared professionally and it obviously
does not include Schedule C.

Complete Part IV. May be a nuisance but a year or two from
now, you are less likely to get questions.

Mileage is not a travel expense. (I know how that sounds!)
But rather goes on page two, middle, where you do the math
at 36 cents per mile with carryover to page one, line... 9?
you say? Okay.

The latter.

It SEEMS irrelevant, but Part IV numbers are used to
determine if you remembered to exclude commuting mileage.
(You DID remember, didn't you?)

i had to use my cargo van for courier work, and entered it
on line 9. Line 24A is for travel by other means on a
business trip ex... airplane and you deduct the fare.

What tax software are you using. Go to Sch C and there
should be a link yo the auto worksheet. There is where the
milage is entered and it will flow to line 9 not 24a.

If you're claiming business use deductions for your car or
truck, the proper place to enter it is line 9, which
requires you to complete Part IV info. The "Travel"
section, line 24, should be used for common carrier expense
(air, rail, bus, etc.) and lodging/meals in pursuit of your
business.

Use Part IV to determine your mileage deduction. Line 24a is
for business "travel", usually outside your metro area or
overnight.

Default Mileage deduction for self-employed taxpayer

Assume an individual with some income from self-employment.
They use car in the activities from which they derive this
self-employment income, and decide to use the standard
mileage deduction of $0.36 per mile for activities related
to the self-employment income in 2003.

Can the mileage deduction just be entered on line 24a of
Schedule C, "Travel" or does it have to be entered on line 9
after completing Part IV of Schedule C, which seems
irrelevant when you are using the standard mileage
deduction?
