Yep, I've noticed that. It also pops on the 8880 *without
the red exclamation point* if the first W2 is for an amount
in excess of the upper limit for the TP status, as I just
discovered Friday ... though I'm not sure why.

Sometimes too much so.

I had a taxpayer today who wasn't eligible for this credit
solely because she took a 401(k) disbursement more than her
contribution. The 8880 was treating everything fine, but I
couldn't get rid of an error notice without going into the
8880 and telling it the irrelevant fact that she wasn't a
student.

Just a side note, Bill. Drake uses input screens while
Taxwise (of which I'm naturally fond of) has the look and
feel of a real form or schedule. WYSIWYG.

And it only places the 8880 for your notification IF there
is either an IRA or other retirement entry on W2's. When I
enter a husband's W2 with a D in block 12 and the amount,
there is the 8880 listed with a red exclamation point to
catch my eye. then I enter the wife's W2, maybe also with
a D in block 12 an amount which pushes income over 50000 and
the red exclamation point disappears. Nifty, eh?

I'm speaking professionally, Bill. Orrtax (Intellitax) does
not check. It's one of the many shortcomings of this
software, which I've used for six years, but this is the
last.

Thanks for your replies. I use Orrtax (now called
Intellitax) and they've had loads of problems this year. I
will be switching next year. I looked at Drake last year and
it looked very good. I'm leaning toward them. Are you still
happy with Drake, Helen?

(Smiling broadly now)

I would then certainly recommend TAXWISE, Helen. It's SO
darned fast it's frightening some times. And SO inclusive.

However, I do know that a leopard can't change her spots.

Drake reminds every return that you don't open the 8880. It
gets annoying.

Taxwise does an excellent job of cross checking more than
just this. If, after entering a "d" in block 12 and amount,
and checking for status and income, if the possibility is
there, it IMMEDIATELY adds 8880 to the list on the left with
a red exclamation point, so you won't forget it.

Just like when you indicate with a x that a child was in day
care, a 2441 is also added to the pane on the left.

It's really neat, and I heartily recommend it.

Yes, TaxWise automatically brings up an 8880. Maybe you do
need different software, but then maybe you don't qualify.
There's an upper AGI limit of $50K for MFJ, $37.5K for HOH
and $25K for any other filing status. (Table 39-1, Page
268, Pub 17)

Taxwise (professional software) checks. Maybe you need to
download an update to your software.

Default Form 8880

Does your software check for 8880 automatically, or at least
remind you to check. Mine does not and I don't know why. All
the info is there after you input all the W2 info, so why
doesn't it check? Maybe I need different software.
