In general, advertising is not subject to sales or use tax.

What kind of advertising are you selling? Ads that appear
on your web site? Pop-ups? Magazine or newspaper
advertising, or billboard space? TV commercials? If it is
electronic it is almost certainly not subject to sales tax
anywhere. Advertising that appears in print or on
billboards, etc. could be taxable in some circumstances.

Generally you are not required to collect taxes on sales to
customers in states where you have no physical presence (no
office, employees, property, etc.).

Check with your home state department of revenue, explain to
them the business you will be conducting, and they will give
you the information you need.

As with catalog sales, in general you are only required to
collect sales tax for the state in which you have a store or
sales people. You should check with your state, though, to
see if they have a reciprocal agreement to collect tax from
the residents of any other state, which would mean you have
to, too.

Default Website sales and state taxes

I'm wanting to start a website where I sell advertising. At
first locally but eventually across the country. Is there
sales tax? How do I calculate? Do I have to file in every
state?

THANKS!
