Your problem is not how to become a resident of Michigan,
but how to become a nonresident of Minnesota while
continuing to live and work there. You'll be a resident of
Minnesota as long as you maintain a permanent place of abode
and spend more than 183 days of the taxable year in the
state. Minn. Stat. § 290.01, Subd. 7.

You might be able to re-establish, or claim that you never
lost, your domicile in Michigan; and that would make you a
Michigan resident for income tax purposes. But you would
still be a Minnesota resident and therefore not eligible for
the reciprocity agreement (which protects only nonresidents
from Minnesota taxes).

Default Re-establish Michigan residency

I moved from Michigan to Minnesota 2 years ago and
established residency in MN including buying a home. For
various reasons I want to re-establish residency in
Michigan. Can I do this while continuing to work in
Minneapolis? From what I can see, the tax reciprocity
agreement between the 2 states requires a physical presence
in Michigan on 1 day per month in order to be considered a
resident of that state. I intend to purchase a condo in
Michigan where my wife and I plan to retire in the future.

Thanks for any advice.
