You'll be a resident of Minnesota as long as you maintain a permanent place of abode and spend more than 183 days of the taxable year in the state. Minn. Stat. § 290.01, Subd. 7. You might be able to re-establish, or claim that you never lost, your domicile in Michigan; and that would make you a Michigan resident for income tax purposes. But you would still be a Minnesota resident and therefore not eligible for the reciprocity agreement (which protects only nonresidents from Minnesota taxes). From what I can see, the tax reciprocity agreement between the 2 states requires a physical presence in Michigan on 1 day per month in order to be considered a resident of that state. I intend to purchase a condo in Michigan where my wife and I plan to retire in the future. Thanks for any advice. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
