Prepare both NJ and NY returns by hand or purchase software
that can handle more than one state.

You will need to file in both states, as NY and NJ do not
have a reciprocal tax agreement.

First complete your NY IT-203 non-resident income tax
return. Next complete your NJ-1040. On the NJ-1040 you will
be allowed a credit for most, but not all, of the tax you
paid to NY.

There's your problem. Most software will let you buy an
extra state.

Yes. You have to file a NJ resident return and a NY
non-resident return.

You need to get different software.

There is no way your NJ return could be correct if you did
not complete the NY return first.

If you get a good software package, such as TurboTax, with
both the NJ and NY state packages, it will walk you through
what you have to do. Or go to a professional preparer.

First of all, your software is inadequate if it will only
allow you to do one state and you clearly need to file in
two states. NJ is your resident state and accordingly
taxes your global income. NY - you are a non-resident and
need to file a non resident return. NJ allows a credit for
taxes paid to other states on income that is taxed duplicately.

Sounds somewhat like you really need professional help.
Perhaps you should seek a CPA/tax professional to prepare
your tax returns.

Default line in NJ work in NJ and NY

I lived in NJ for the entire year. I worked in NJ from
january to june and then changed jobs and worked in NY
from june to the end of the year. Do i need to file to
both states? the tax software that i am using will only
allow for one state. when i was in NJ i was in college
and worked part time and was only taxed for the state of
NJ. I graduated and then changed jobs and worked in NY
and was only taxed for the state AND city of NY (NJ tax
was not taken out). i made most of my salary for the year
from my job in NY. I filed my return for NJ with two
additional localities 1 as NY state and 2 as NYC. The
refund comes out to barely a 100 dollars. If i don't put
the 2 localities in, i owe over 1500. I am almost
positive both of these cases are not correct.

If i file as a non resident of NY i get back over 1500
from NY and 0 from NJ becuse i can only file for NY. If
i do it this way i am afraid that i will owe NJ taxes and
not know about it. What is the correct way of filing in my
situation?

Thanks in advance.
