Wow. Every one of my stock mutual funds had virtually
all of their dividends listed as qualified on the
1099-DIV. Only ones that didn't were (not at all
surprisingly) bond funds.

Ok then, I hope you're right. I've just yet to see a 1099
from a mutual fund with any qualified dividends. But
there's always tomorrow.

Mutual funds distribute both qualified and nonqualified
dividends. I see no reason why a closed end fund would be
any different.

The taxpayer should call the fund and ask why the dividends
received were not qualified. It's possible that the payout
represented interest income. However, it is my
understanding that this fund owns shares in AT&T and its
spin offs since 1984. One could logically deduce that some
of the dividends paid by the fund are dividends received on
the stock and would be qualified.

Well, not quite. Since it's a fund, the fund's dividends
are qualified to the extent they're allocable to qualified
dividends paid out on the fund's holdings.

Since it's a fund, dividends are not qualified.

Does anyone know if the dividends for the closed end fund
symbol ATF are qualified. We have shares in this fund that
the broker has indicated are not qualified on our 1099.
However, we have held the shares for over six years and take
the dividends in cash.

If anyone holds this fund, could you either post the way
they were recorded on your 1099 or post where one can
contact to determine the qualification status of the
dividends.

Thanks,
