Yes, I did print an incomplete return with TA 2003 last
night using a Samsung ML-1210 printer and a computer running
Win98SE. The forms don't look exactly like the IRS forms,
but they look OK to me.

you might want to ask in a taxact users group -
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TaxACTors/

I know it works fine with Win98 and epson stylus

No. I have not yet started my 2003 taxes.

Apparently you e-filed. (If you had mailed your paper
return, then obviously the IRS would have seen the same
thing you printed, because that's what you sent them.) When
you e-file, the IRS gets just the numbers from your return
in an internal "bits and bytes" computer format, not an
image of the paper return. So the fonts and layout don't
matter at all.

Assuming what I am printing is what the IRS saw.

Could be a printer problem, but it is just an HP-4P. It is
an older and, I think, very standard printer.

On the TaxAct web page, my computer displayed a few
suspicious looking boxes, the kind I have seen when a
character wasn't present. I'm wondering if it might not be a
Windows problem.

I have contacted TaxAct, but they couldn't help.

Have you looked at the output of the 2003 version?

TaxAct available at www.TaxAct.com is very reasonably
priced. It has all the states available.

If the forms and/or program are approved by the IRS, then
the IRS (by definition) accepts the changes. If not,....

I filed my returns for my two sons last year with TaxAct.
They looked OK to me except that the type was a bit heavier
than the IRS forms. I did not see any words that were
carried to other lines, but then again, I did not look for
any. . You /may/ have a printer problem. You may want to
contact TaxAct customer support first and ask if they know
of any printing problems.

I have TaxAct. It looks like an excellent program,

BUT, contrary to what the program says. the printed output
is not an "exact replica" of IRS forms.

The fonts are a little different. Some words are carried
over to different lines. The margins are a little different.
Etc.

Does this make a difference?
Does the IRS care?

A pencil and a federal tax form would probably work just
fine.

Check out TaxACT. They have a free version that might do
what you need.

I don't have a link but a google search will find them.

I don't mean this sarcastically, but why not just do
it by hand? If all you have is a W-2 and a 1099-INT,
it should take you about 10 minutes, if that, to do
the return manually.
