1/31/04 was a Saturday. Therefore, the date moved to the
first workday of the next month: 2/2/04.

All tax info documents(W-2, 1099, etc.) for year 2003 are
required to be postmarked by 02/02/04, because 02/01/04 fell
on a sunday.

As it was, since January 31st fell on a weekend. February
2nd was the next business day.

February 2 *was* the correct date. When the January 31
deadline falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it is moved to the
following Monday.

Because when 1/31 falls on a weekend, the deadline is
extended to the next business day (2/2 in 2004).

2-2-04 is the correct deadline for mailing W-2s and 1099Rs
to recipients. January 31 falls on Saturday, so the next
business day is 2-2-04!

I certainly hopes that this is reported to Congress. The
TSP unit should be fined for every late issued document.
That should be taken out of the responsible person's
paycheck!

The San Diego County Retirement Assoc with thousands of
1099-R's sent theirs out on 02-02-04. They had lots of tel
calls asking where they were. The CFO said he read
"somewhere" that 02-02 was the correct date. Why not 02-03
or ?????

Default Late 1099R's

I've noticed several late 1099R's this year, more than
usual.

Today however, a client had the letter about her withdrawal
from TSP, which is the federal government's Thrift Savings
Plan for civil service workers. According to the phone
message and web site, 1099R will not be mailed out till mid
February.

So she asked, when does the government say they should be
"furnished'? I said "January 31st". She said "just like
the government, not practicing what it preaches."
