That's not true in general.

There is. You only get a credit for AMT caused
by "deferral" preferences (like ISO exercises).
You do NOT get a credit for AMT causes by
"exclusion" preferences (like state and local
taxes).

Default AMT credit?

I was told that if you paid AMT in one year and didn't the
next, that you could get a credit of the prior year's tax in
the next.

I feel there is a detail missing here.
