Within hours hundreds of parent's tax returns are compromised. Not only should parents talk to the kids early-on about sex and drugs; now we need to include taxes in the discussion. -- To reply to me directly, remove the XXX characters from my email address. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

In your case, since both of you have filed, see what happens with both returns and then amend accordingly. I'm assuming both are already in the IRS pipeline. One of my clients was in last Saturday and she and husband claimed their two sons, as always. The efiled return was bounced however, since their University of Georgia freshman son had, along with all his buddies in the dorm, filed their returns each claiming themselves. Of course the son was in the 10% tax bracket while parents are in 25% bracket. Plus the fact parents paid tuition for the son. Upshot was we went ahead and filed the return without him, but will amend both parent's and son's return after the dust has settled. Moral of the stories: parents? | My 18 year old son just went online and electronically filed his taxes via the H&R Block Web Site. The problem is he checked box 6A (1040) claiming himself and taking the standard deduction. The problem is I have declared him on my return since he is and 18 year old full time college student. The result of this error is his refund is $44.00 more than it should be. Should I file an amended return? Will this trigger an audit of my return when I claim him as a dependent? Thanks for the help. Regards.
