If the son is receiving Social Security disability benefits,
he has proof of disability already--the SS award letter.

If the son is unmarried he doesn't have to qualify as a
dependent or be disabled to be a "qualifying person" for
HofH filing status.

In general, when a doctor's determination is required, e.g.
blindness and long-term care, I'd get a letter and keep it
with my records.

Default Proof of Disability

What IRS directive states what you need to prove a person is
disabled. I have a client who sez her 40 year old son
suffers from schizophrenia. I know that she can claim HOH
if the son is permanently disabled. She provided over 50%
of his support and he lives with her. He made a little too
much to be claimed as a dependent and had to file a return.
I read about credit for the disabled and it states that you
have to have proof from a doctor to take this credit. Does
she need proof of the disability from a doctor in case she
is ever audited.
