Maybe as a dependent, not for head of household status.

See the 5 tests for the dependency exemption in Publication
501. The ones you may have particular trouble with are the
relationship test and the gross income test. If he lived in
your home the entire year, and your relationship didn't
violate local law (this can be a big deal in states that
still have cohabitation or sodomy laws), you're OK on the
relationship test. The gross income test requires that he
not have over $3,050 of his own income (if he has more
income, but he's under 19 (or a full-time student under 24),
you're still OK).

The qualifying person for head of household status must be
one of certain defined relatives (or a foster child);
someone who's no relation doesn't qualify.

If you lived together the entire year and
If this living arrangemnent did not violate local law, and
if you paid more than half his support costs, and
if his gross income was less than $3,050, and
if he didn't file a joint tax returnm, and
if he was a US citizen or resident of the US, Canada or
Mexico,
then you can claim a dependency exemption for him.

He is not a qualifying person for Head of Household, however.

*If* your boyfriend had less than $3050 income in 2003, you
can claim him as a dependent.

However, he fails the *relationship* test for filing as H-H.
(Maybe you could _adopt him <G> ?)

He may qualify as a dependent, but he is not a "qualifying
person" for Head of Household filing status. See
Publication 501.

Default head of household

I had a boyfriend for 12 months in 2003 and paid all
expenses, car payments, food, insurance, medical, etc. I
own my home and want to know if I can claim this person as a
dependent and filing status as head of household
